“Jill is a wonderful, nurturing teacher. I especially love her classes for the focus and mindfulness through creative sequences. She has deep knowledge of the body and is a perceptive, experienced, and sensitive teacher. I miss my regular classes with her and added Morocco to my future travel destinations.”

Who will teach you yoga?

I’ve been practicing yoga since 2000 and teaching movement since 2008, in the US, Vietnam, East Timor, India, Indonesia, and in Morocco, in various forms of dance, improvisation, writing, yoga, meditation, and workshops involving all of the above to people age four to 80 years-old. I’m E-RYT 500 Yoga Alliance certified.

My Yoga Story (in Brief)

I discovered meditation in 2000, young and intrigued with consciousness and the unconscious mind. I studied yoga from then on, mostly in aim to stabilize my tendencies of pushing too hard and too fast, too much perfectionism, too much thinking, analyzing, stressing, achieving, rebelling, burning out.

My formal, daily practice of yoga began with TriYoga — a unique combination of Vinyasa and Kundalini Yoga — although I knew little about types of yoga at the time. I practiced what was available to me in Iowa City from 2002-2004.

My primary focus was dance before and after those heavy yoga years. I studied somatics, which combined an experiential anatomical and physiological approach with therapeutic movement and touch, weekly from 2005-2008 with Deborah Jinza-Thayer in Minneapolis. Somatics heavily influenced my teaching of yoga-asana years later.

During my dance years in Minneapolis, I dropped into yoga classes a couple times per week, typically drawn to Vinyasa, especially with Sarah Baumert — because of her awareness of the body and alignment — and Ben Vincent whose focus on “calming the central nervous system” was exactly what I needed and which he was incredibly gifted at delivering.

In 2008 I began teaching ballet, modern dance, hip hop and break dance and continued as a regular student in yoga and dance classes and workshops. I also frequented pranayama and meditation classes instead of asana through rough patches with my health as another safe space for me to be grounded in my body and community.

In 2012 I moved to Hanoi, Vietnam, and there I was offered a teaching position by the Iyengar-based studio owner upon completion of a Vinyasa teacher training course with Dominique Renucci. Within my first couple weeks of teaching, I subbed many extra classes and quickly proved myself as a teacher. Within one month, I taught 7 regular classes per week.

After six months, I had over 20 classes per week, private clients, and was managing two studios.

I worked my ass off to get to that point, dedicating all of my time to studying, practicing, and living and breathing yoga. After Hanoi, I continued to pack in senior-teacher’s workshops and trainings throughout the continent of Asia, including my first advanced TTC with Dominique Renucci in Rishikesh, India in 2014-15 and my second with Tina Nance in Ubud, Bali in 2016.

Tina Nance’s TTC, co-taught with Dr. Jimi Wollumbin, was my dream course, weaving the meridian system and five-element theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine with Hatha Yoga. This has been the heaviest influence on my asana teaching since, both with Hatha and Yin.

Although I have a solid background in Iyengar and have been pushed to extremes in asana and meditation practices, health challenges have since taught me to soften the reins on my practices. As a result, I’ve learned to prioritize meeting my body where she is in each moment.

This is my primary interest and dedication to my students now — how to balance effort with ease, refine engagement, discover deeper release, and ultimately, soften to allow flow and ease.

“Jill shows a depth of knowledge and an ease that only comes from years of training and personal practice. Her focus, sequencing, and understanding of movement is outstanding. Each class she guided led me to a deeper place within myself.

I have had a long personal practice and am also a qualified teacher. Jill is easily among the most intuitive and gifted of many teachers I have learned from. For me, it was practice at a deep level, with guidance from Jill that revealed her extensive understanding of yoga.”
